Eternal basically feels like a game targeted almost specifically at me and I fucking love it.ĭOOM 16 is fucking fantastic and was my favourite shooter of all time before Eternal but I personally just love how much Eternal builds on 16, leans into the sort of ridiculous lore on those Doomslayer stones, expands that world and gets to deliver a more varied set of levels because of it. It is just so completely ridiculous and I love it so much. Personally I'm all for how much DOOM Eternal fucking GOES FOR IT. Doom 2016 immerses me in it's world, but I can't take Doom Eternal seriously one bit. Doom 2016 to this day still looks utterly fantastic and encapsulates the hellish vibe much better. Whilst the latter may have a better engine and technically more accomplished, the art style is garish and cartoony. I also felt the visuals of Doom 2016 are superior to Doom Eternal. Though admittedly Doom 2016 feels like a walk in the park - ultraviolence = easy mode in Eternal! (I personally think ID have ramped the difficulty for Eternal, or more accurately The Ancient Gods, a bit too much to the point where it's unbalanced but that's a different conversation altogether)

Weapons feel powerful and it's refreshing not to constantly spam the chainsaw to obtain ammo. I'm not entirely sure if I am a fan of this approach as ammo is extremely limited in Doom Eternal, enemies are more tanky/bullet sponges, and you are essentially forced to use the chainsaw after killing every other enemy! Either way, the basic gunplay in 2016 is good enough. Certain enemies can only be beaten with certain weapons (eg Headshotting angels with the scoped AR). However, Doom Eternal seems to force you to play 'rock, paper, scissors'. The moveset of the Slayer is clearly superior, and you have lots of weapons/abilities at your disposal. Perhaps the saving grace of the sequel is the core gameplay itself.

I'm not referring to the expanded lore - this was all woven in 2016 - however, Doom Eternal just comes across as very campy. The story in 2016 also felt more serious. In contrast, Doom Eternal has taken a huge step back in it's presentation. The game felt much more grounded and the presentation is second to none - this goes from the UI, loading screens, the tone of the story, and visual style/art.

I am almost saddened by how much better the actual single player campaign in Doom 2016 is compared to Doom Eternal. Doom 2016 feels like the game was made by a completely different team.
